Urban Square 1

When YDS designs residential buildings, the practice always questions the concept of “living together”. Creating public spaces of squares and promenades within residential building are the main design theme.

When one goes to apartments, one reaches there by roads. In many cases, spaces of agora and path would vanish once one enters residential buildings. Corridors by which you go to your own housing unit are simply routes and they cut the relationship with the cities.

Agoras where residents would gather, interact with each other, and feel nature are essential spaces.

In Void in a Forest, ‘Urban Court like western agoras is created. It is enclosed by the walls and the louvers. In residential buildings where economical rationality are highly valued, there are always some difficulties in making these public spaces.

YDS pursues designing these public spaces as effective as possible by carefully studying laws and given conditions.
